Planting a Miniature Garden
Thu, August 19, 2010
Our favorite ride at Disneyland has always been the Storybook Land Canal Boats. This dreamy boat ride allows you to drift along while gazing upon Disney scenes recreated on a miniature scale. On our last trip, we were inspired to create our own miniature garden at home. Who knew that there was a whole world out there already doing this, and brilliantly I might add. I came across an adorable website called Wee Garden. They feature the most adorable potted gardens and sell kits to get you started.
My four year old son and I ventured out to our local nursery this morning and gathered plants and materials to make our very own. He loved choosing the plants and scooping the small pebbles for pathways. We even scraped moss from the cracks on our walkway to use for our project. It was a perfect summer activity under our shady tree.
Here are the steps we followed according to A Wee Garden:
- Line your container with pebbles
- Add a layer of sand or (we used dirt)
- Arrange plants largest first
- Continue planting along edges
- Use moss to edge
- Nestle small plants into moss
- Use tiny pebbles to create a path
- Add details, fill tiny pots with moss clumps
(Our mini furniture was purchased and included in the Wee Garden's Grow Imagination Kit)
Here are two books we love on gardening with children. A Baby's Garden: Introducing Your Baby to the Joys of the Garden and A Child's Garden: Introducing Your Child to the Joys of the Garden
There are wishes to water and dreams to dig up, greatness to grow and silliness to sow...- A Wee Garden
