A Smurf Berry Party

My son who is now 6 years old, has his birthday party theme chosen months before his actual birthday. I suppose I began the tradition of having a theme but he has now owned the ritual and it makes me laugh when I hear him declare his party theme a week after his last party! This spring my husband taught him how to build a Smurf village on our iPad. It's similar to the Farmville or Sim City games where you create and earn your dwelling place. Our son declared "I want a Smurf party this year." Needless to say, I had a flash back to elementary school, and once again fell in love with those little blue creatures. Luckily, Hollywood did as well (releasing a Smurf movie this past summer), which did make for easier access to Smurf goods. My sweet sister and I really had as much fun planning this party as the kids did celebrating.
Miniature Smurf Village
The kids were very very excited to mine for Smurf gems.
We found a inexpensive way to get toadstools to pop up around the yard. We painted paper bowls and paper towel rolls, glued them together and made fun mushrooms.
My Amazing sister made this incredible cake, she's very talented. After all the work I saw her put into the cake i felt guilty eating it.
This little play house was transformed into a mushroom by taping paper to the top, stuffing it, then stapling it closed. It served as the tattoo shop, where tattoos were applied by Smurfette.
We added some radishes to the salad and very easily carved them into mushrooms. (Just remember to soak them in water before serving to prevent them turning brown.)
One dilemma I kept running into was how in the world would I make healthy blue food? Sounds yucky huh? We did manage to make Smurf berry ice cream and strawberry dipping sauce by using all natural food coloring from Seelect Herb Tea Company (made from vegetable and plant extracts). It really made things blue too!!
The kids got to paint their own pots blue and plant "Smurf Berry Trees."
We made the mushroom party favors out of empty baby food jars. We painted the grass on the side of jars and then the tops red with little white patches. We filled the jars with a Smurf ring, magnet, stickers and a mini Smurf character.
